Sorebrek's Musings and Ramblings

In search of the holy grail of an MBA (class of 2008 hopeful), this space will hopefully chronicle the search and my other quixotic pursuits.

SIM seeks ~26 MBA applicant M/F - SF Bay area

Me:
  • Yeti (Male/Indian b-school applicant/IT background)
  • B-school applicant - applying this fall
  • San Francisco bay area resident
  • Applying to H/S/K/W/Chicago/Columbia/Sloan/Haas PT
You:
  • B-school applicant - applying this fall
  • San Francisco bay area resident or someone with a good long-distance calling plan
  • Applying to at least one of H/S/K/W/Chicago/Columbia/Sloan/Haas PT
We:
  • Swap strategy/ideas, information and yes, gossip on the application process
  • Help out with mock interviews
  • Bitch about how hard this whole deal is (well, may be not)
What?!
No, you're not seeing a Craigslist cross-post. If that title won't get your attention, what will? ;-) A bit more context: so I've been preparing to apply to b-school this fall since about a year now. My biggest asset has been other applicants (incoming class this fall), several of who are good friends. They helped me formulate my strategy, find my bearing and in general be such wonderful people. I remain indebted. Unfortunately almost all of them are gone from the bay area this summer to start school or move on with other plans. I still have ways to go with the application process. I was hoping to compare notes with a few other fellow applicants in the area. I would rather I do this with individuals who are involved in the application process and distant enough to be critical. Using friends from real life for this purpose suffers on both counts: the application process is complicated enough that it takes one (going through it) to know one; besides friends would most likely water down opinion. Ideally, I'm looking for a diverse group. Why? I'll be honest: I'm not sure I want to share 'everything' I know about the application process with someone who is clearly a competitor. I'm sure others feel the same way; whether they'll say it out aloud or not is another matter. I'm happy to exchange information with someone whose selection will not affect my demographic pool. So there you have it. Shoot me a note if you're interested - my e-mail id is on the side-bar. Cheers for the weekend.

Looks like you can churn out a perfect matrimonial ad for yourself, when reqd!! ;-)

btw it's not the Yeti vs. rest. There is another breed like 'me' who don't know where they belong. This breed is told by schools like 'Chicago, Michigan, Haas etc' that they are not even eligible to apply to their business programs!!

    So you ask, Why??

Becoz indian degrees are 3 yrs and US are 4 yrs...and they want a 4 years equivalent. Alright, I understand their concerns but I had a 3year degree + 1year diploma, making it 4 yr equivalent. But this doesn't suffice for these schools, they want masters degree (3+2)....and so even before I cud think of chicago etc, I was shown the door.

Haggling with adcom and presenting ur case from 5 difft perspectives also doesn't help - coz an admission rule is a rule is a rule!!

Moral of the story - Being an Indian/IT/Male etc isn't all that bad!!

Schools do not bray about diversity for nothing! The Indian IT male is the most competitive pool. Its funny thoh that Indian gals have it easy. Well, guys do pay the price! (just one more time).

I am sure that girls would jump at this. But ask the gals about their GMAT's and they would sing the complete application story. To them, my answer is diversity is the key.

Appman, I am not sure whether Gals's GMAT is the characteristic you should have taken in this context ;).

Will be in touch with you on this, really like your being straigt n direct upfront--- "I'll be honest: I'm not sure I want to share 'everything' I know about the application process with someone who is clearly a competitor. I'm sure others feel the same way; whether they'll say it out aloud or not is another matter."

Very late catching up on my blogs but had to comment re. the EXTREMELY offensive GMAT and girls comment. Dude go check your insecurities at the door.

As a girl who had the highest GMAT score among a peer group Sorebrek is familiar with- i;m tired of explaining that the Indian girl who even thinks about applying for an MBA is rare- dont you guys see what we are up against? Family, husbands and a biological clock thats ticking away.

Thats what tilts the scales in our favor. And deservedly so. The quality of desi gals applying to MBA programs on average is much much better than that of a desi guy.

Thats that, I got it off my chest. So FO.
